Hi Dato!,
  just to be sure: do you know if this used to work (without the <Esc>
bit) with former versions of vim?

I'm starting to distinguish among two cases: it is a newly inserted bug,
it is a longstanding bug in the documentation and what you're trying to
do is not supposed to work.
