I struggled with the same error recently as well. Unfortunately I was in
a bit of a rush and I haven't had a chance to file a bug report and
track down exactly what the problem was though.

It seemed to be related to missing directories in /var/run (I'm using
Ubuntu which puts /var/run on a tmpfs) that caused xend not to correctly
spawn xenstored and xenconsoled. Once those directories where there this
problem went away.

Can't remember the exact details right now sorry, but if you're still
having problems this evening I can help out some more.
