Not to object against your RFS, but JFYI.  There's an ongoing effort
to provide "better" qemu-nbd implementation (and its usage in qemu
itself), done by Nick Thomas.  The goal is to allow asyncronous
processing (aio) which is built into the protocol but isn't provided
in most implementations.  And since qemu has quite powerful block
device model already it supports various fun stuff like copy on
write out of the box.
