Upgrade from which version.

I just checked the following with 4.3.10-14 from Squeeze, 4.3.17-1
from Sid and 5.0.0-2 from Experimental:

For Squeeze _and_ Sid: No. Without NumLock on, it beeps for me, too.
With NumLock on, it works fine.

For Sid: Works fine independent of the NumLock state.

Now all three zsh version from Squeeze, Sid and Experimental show the
same behaviour: Without NumLock on, it beeps for me, too. With NumLock
on, it works fine.

So for me, with 5.0.0-2, there are actually less cases where it beeps
compared to Squeeze and Sid.
