[Python-apps-team] Bug#478870: mayavi2: object editor scrollbars fail to show up, until I resize the pane

Package: mayavi2
Version: 2.1.1-2
Severity: normal

Hi!

I noticed a little problem with the GUI.

Please note that I've just upgraded mayavi2 from version 2.1.1-2 to
version 2.1.1-2+b1, but I've previously seen the same issue with
version 2.1.1-2.

Let me try to explain the problem.
For instance, we can follow the steps described in the user guide,
section _Parametric surfaces example_ [1]

[1] /usr/share/doc/mayavi2/docs/mayavi/user_guide/html/examples.html#parametric-surfaces-example

Start mayavi2

  $ mayavi2

The main window shows up.

 * from menus, select File -> Load data -> Create Parametric surface
source [2]
 * in the MayaVi pane, click on ParametricSurface

[2] BTW, the user guide should be updated, since there's no File -> Open
at present, but File -> Load data instead...

The MayaVi object editor pane is populated with controls for the
selected data source. Since the function tab is too high, a vertical
scrollbar is present, so that I can scroll the content of the tab and
reach the remaining controls.
OK, so far, so good.

 * from menus, select Visualize -> Modules -> Outline
 * in the MayaVi pane, click on Outline

The MayaVi object editor pane is populated with controls for the
selected module. Since the these controls are too wide, a horizontal
scrollbar should be present... but... wait, where is it?!?
I cannot see the right edges of many controls (e.g.: I see the lowest
possible Opacity value, that is 0.0, but not the highest one, nor
the actual value!). And there's no scrollbar!

 * resize the MayaVi object editor pane (even of a few pixels)

Wow! Here's the scrollbar! Now it's visible and I can scroll the pane
horizontally and learn that the actual Opacity value is 1.0 ...

This looks like a GUI bug: scrollbars should show up as soon as they
are needed, rather than after some resizing action...

I don't know whether this bug is caused by mayavi2 itself or by some
underlying library. Feel free to reassign the bug to the correct
package, as appropriate.
