But wouldn't saned then be linked against libsane-net also?
Your solution works when the connection goes to a different host, but
here saned on the same host is connected.

And without static linking xsane to sane-net I don't see a solution.

If you link xsane against the shared lib libsane-net.so, the dynamic
loader will still load libsane.so beacuse of our fiddlings with soname.
