Hmmm....  
"How do I know the order of the channels when the samples are interleaved?"

The planar format uses the same order.  Described by the same mechanism.

It cleans up the code flow and the semantics of the scanning operations 
 *a lot*.  I'll assume you haven't read the rest of your email yet today,
 but if you're still not convinced later on, I can add more comments.
