Dan,

sorry for the late reply. You can set the debug environment variable  
and then run the scanimage program again. This will record all  
information that's exchanged between the scanner and the backend. For  
the EPSON backend, do the following:

export SANE_DEBUG_EPSON=128
scanimage > /tmp/scan.log 2>&1

You can email this file to me.
