'acceptable' is in the eye of the beholder :) Some people are not
bothered by binaries, and those that are bothered are a small enough
segment for vendors to ignore. This has gone on for so long precisely
because the proprietary driver exists. It removed much of the impetus
for an outsider to reverse engineer it.
