I did and maybe I just misinterpreted the logo. It says
RW and DVD+R below. The logo looks like

but without the "DL" and without the second "layer"
behind RW, both of which presumably mean double layer.

Assuming that the RW logo does not actually mean
RW but +R instead and thus that the media type is
reported correctly, is there anything left to do other
than trying this drive in another computer?

I would gladly let you have the drive if it's broken, but
I don't think they would replace it unless I return the
old one ;)
If you are in/near Munich, you are more than welcome
to poke at it, though.
