we used ssshd for roaming profile and such and its kind of a black box but 
it works. it depend on your setup the one you want to choose.

having migrated from FreeIPA to OpenLDAP for a customer i would advise 
against FreeIPA as it needs 389DS, the schema are not standard and id 
doesnt play well when you try to insert new schem etc..

Furthermore FreeIPA is interface is very basic and not extensible at all

FusionDirectory is well alive and kicking :)  and people use it in varied 
ways around the world.
