+When people hear the term `\DebianMed' the first time there are usually
+two kind of misconceptions. Sorting out these in the first place seems
+to be the best way to explain what it really is.
+
+People who know Debian well as a large distribution of Free Software
+usually consider Debian Med as some kind of customisation of Debian
+which is derived from Debian to serve some purpose in medical care.
+Astonishingly the idea that customisation can be done perfectly {\em
+inside} Debian is not well known and the technical term {\em Debian Pure
+Blend} seems to be hidden well enough in the Debian universe that most
+people have failed perfectly to understand the concept. There are no
+separate repositories like PPAs or something like this -- a Debian Pure
+Blend (as the term pure implies) is Debian itself and if you have
+received Debian you have full \DebianMed included. There are other
+Blends inside Debian like Debian Science, Debian Edu, Debian GIS and
+others.
+
+The other misconception about the term `\DebianMed' comes from people
+working in health care. They tend to assume that \DebianMed is some
+dedicated software primarily targeting at managing a doctors practice.
+Sometimes the expectation goes that far that people assume the
+\DebianMed team would actually develop this software. However, the
+truth about the \DebianMed team is that we are a group of Debian
+developers working hard to include {\em existing} medical software right
+into the Debian distribution. We have no chance to include anything
+that does not yet exist and so we try to cherry-pick from the set of
+Free Software that is useful for several tasks in medical care. Because
+we do not restrict ourselves to pure practice management Debian now
+contains besides two practice management systems (GNUmed and
+FreeMedForms) way more other software useful in medical care. The main
+fields to be mentioned are bioinformatics (next generation sequencing,
+phylogeny, etc.) and medical imaging. We do also maintain a todo list
+of software that should be included as time and manpower permits. For
+instance one of the main candidates at the horizon is VistA - an
+integrated health information system which is successfully running in
+several hospitals.
+
+After having clarified the misconceptions about \DebianMed we try to
+give a positive definition: \DebianMed is a pure subset of Debian that
+tries to integrate any existing Free Software that might be used in any
+of the several subfields of medical care. In other words it is a Debian
+Pure Blend covering medical and microbiological software.
+
+The \DebianMed project started in 2002 with a very small team but
+evolved over time to about 25 people working more or less actively in
+adding more and more relevant software to the package pool and caring
+for some general infrastructure inside Debian. Ten of the Debian
+developers got this developer status only because the \DebianMed project
+existed. In other words the subproject has a positive effect onto the
+Debian distribution as a whole because it attracts manpower.
+
+\DebianMed to some extend works as the missing link between the
+developers of Free Software in medicine (in Debian slang `upstream') and
+the end user (as receiving end of the software.) It drastically
+decreases the effort of installation on a system (by so called
+metapackages - if you install such a metapackage you get all relevant
+software from a specific subfield.) We try to care about security
+problems and bugfixes and quite frequently we support upstream with
+patches to enhance their software. Because of this we have established
+a quite good connection to the authors of the software in our focus and
+thus try to help forming a large community around the universe of Free
+Software of medicine - on a solid and well known technical basis as the
+Debian distribution.
+
+Once the \DebianMed idea is explained this way and people got the idea
+they usually start dreaming: Oh, that's nice I could start to work on
+my medical tasks without needing to spend any money any more, wonderful.
+Well, that's a nice dream but we need to wake up you because we try to
+be honest and do not want to trick you with false promises. Yes, you
+get the software with no cost for the license to use and this for sure
+will effectively reduce your costs. We also like to state that it is
+not only free of charge but high quality software which can be even be
+proven by showing the code. We will not play dirty tricks with your
+data and we will not be the stumbling stone when it comes to porting
+your data from one to another system.
+
+However, the truth is that on one side health care and on the other side
+computer science are complex fields of work and you will barely find
+professionals who are experts in both fields at the same time. So if
+you are working in health care you are responsible for the health of the
+patient and not primarily for the health of your IT systems. In other
+words: You finally need to spend some money to hire an IT expert who
+maintains your IT infrastructure and provides the service you need for
+your work.
+
+\DebianMed is targeting at these service providers to hand over some
+high quality software free of charge with strong ties established to the
+developers. They do easily have the chance to adapt the code to the
+needs of their clients and can become part of the fascinating world of
+Free Software by providing back their enhancements to the upstream
+developers. These unique features of Free Software will bring service
+providers selling support for Free Software in medical care in a very
+good position compared to others selling proprietary software: They can
+provide better service for less money. Finally the clients in medical
+care will profit as well from the better service for less money and this
+is possibly the way the dream from above might become reality.
+
+Finally we can conclude: \DebianMed tries do be the fundament on which
+you can base a cheaper, more reliable and more flexible IT
+infrastructure for medical care by at the same time gaining independence
+from proprietary companies.
+
+As you probably know Debian itself has a lot of derivatives (Ubuntu,
+Linux Mint, etc.) -- it is actually the most derived existing Linux
+distribution. The advantage of working strictly inside Debian has the
+positive side effect that also all derivatives will profit from the work
+of the \DebianMed team. Sometimes there even exist strong connections
+to derivatives like
