problem with minicom

Hi
I am using minicom 2.4 on ubuntu 10.04. I am trying to interface a GSM module with my laptop using a RS232 to USB connector. The interfacing works but minicom tends to hang often, in most cases it hangs as soon as i type a few lines. I am not able to type anything further and am not able to see the text. To solve the latter, i switched on the echo but the commands are not getting executed. Can you help me out with this?
