That does not seem to me a good reason to change severity of a bug, if I
interpret the bts documentation correctly. It will also prevent you from
getting help with maintenance for your package, since the downgrading
decreases visibility of the bug report and hence visibility of the
problems the package has.

That seems totally adequate considered the state of the package.
There has recently been a call for requests for removal [1]. Maybe you
want to consider filing such a request for this package?
