Bits and pieces of documentation

Finally I've found some time to begin writing on the documentation.

I'd like to check in what I have at the moment.

Do we use any repository to store versions? I only have access to alioth and
this only as guest - at least that's what my username indicates to me.

Further do you know of any documentation guidelines (e.g. use DocBook, prepare
it this or that way) I should follow?
