The problem, from the file that you supplied, is:

MAIN_RELAY_TO_DOMAINS=empty
.endif
.ifndef ETC_MAILNAME
ETC_MAILNAME=# localhost.localdomain
.endif

How have you ended up with mailname set to something invalid? (With a
leading "# ".)
