Hello Emmet

Thank your for your help, I am 90 % sure that the bug will occur on 
Ubuntu on well.
First step would be to be to build a mame 0.146-2 package on your box 
using the source package at http://packages.debian.org/sid/mame
( hint: first step is dget -x 
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/m/mame/mame_0.146-2.dsc )

you need at 2GB in ram + swap to build mame
