That seems to be it, since the attached patch fixes the issue at least
for me on my HP Compaq 615. 

I'm raising the severity because of two reasons:

* on this machine the Fn-keys for adjusting the brightness don't work, 
  so with g-p-m not working either I have no way to adjust the display 
  brightness.
  Combined with the fact that the brightness is set to minimal after   
  suspending this makes the machine unusable until a reboot.

* the Archlinux bug report[1] mentions two laptops with
  broken brightness control - so I think we have at least four *very*
  different machines where brightness control doesn't work without hal:
  ThinkPads, Macbooks, Toshiba Notebooks and HP Compaq Notebooks. 

Like Brian Johnson[2] I think that more or less all laptops have lost
brightness functionality in g-p-m. However, if the maintainer disagrees,
don't hesitate to lower the severity.
