I have also had mail losses with a normal IMAP account.  Most recently a FC5 machine with the rpm kdepim.i386 6:3.5.2-0.1.fc5 talking across a 802.11b link to an FC3 machine with imap-2004-0.fdr.8.a.3.  Kmail was set to a 1 minute check and the wifi had backups run across it so it was sometimes quite busy.  The second time I lost mail I moved to Thunderbird.  Loss was (fortunately!) rare happening twice over a period of perhaps 6 months to a year.
