After reading it all up again I've to admit that you're right. I closed the
bug back then with the thought in mind that the primary reason for the
wish to build without assertions should be resolved with the applied patch.
Actually the decision if it's harmfull to have assertions turned on for
stable releases should be revised for the lenny release.

Regarding my relationship to the BTS and it's inner workings I actually
thought that it would inform every reporter for a closed merged bug. Now
I learned that it's not the case and I'm not sure if that's just one of
the freaking undocumented 'features' or more sort of a bug in the BTS.
Guess I'll never learn every feature of this monster. :-(
