Thomas,

I checked out the init file and it will only display those messages if
$VERBOSE is not 'no'

$VERBOSE is set in /lib/init/vars.sh , on most systems it will be
'VERBOSE=no' on line 12
So if you edit this file and check that to verbose=yes you will see
messages (Other things will be verbose on your system
also though)

With that being said it seems that messages by design are not going to
STDOUT, personally I agree with you, but this
is probably more of a feature request than a bug.
