[sane-devel] Use can't scanimage when xserver runiing

I have a Debian testing ( 3.2.0-2-686-pae kernel) box with Sane 1.0.14-9,
xsane gscan2pdf.  When a user logs in to the command line, scanimage -L
returns  the scanner info. After starting X and Fluxbox, the same command
in a terminal emulator finds no scanner (HP PSC1410) , nor do the GUI apps.

When root does the same, everything works.  user is a member of saned and
scanner groups, and a user added with default group memberships has same
experience as user with explicit group membership.

The instance Debian is upgraded weekly.  This was noticed last week.
HPLIP, Sane, and all UI apps have been purged and reinstalled.
