Here are things I make certain are in /dev on the initrd image:

mknod -m 660 ram0 b 1 0
mknod -m 660 console c 5 1
mknod -m 660 tty0 c 4 0
mknod -m 660 tty2 c 4 2
mknod -m 666 mem c 1 1
mknod -m 666 kmem c 1 2
mknod -m 666 null c 1 3
mknod -m 666 port c 1 4
mknod -m 666 zero c 1 5
mkdir fb
mknod -m 660 fb/0 c 29 0
mknod -m 660 vcs1 c 7 1

Is the initramfs stuff I should be able to play with on Etch? How to I
activate it?
