By default, the purge delay should be 120 seconds. I assume that it is
enough for your gnome-terminal. Something else in your setup must reduce
it to an insufficient value.

I remember of someone on debian-gtk-gnome proposing to put somewhere
in .gnomerc or in /etc/X11/Xsession.d something to reduce it to
something very small. Maybe you did it at that time?
