rsvg-convert seems to work well enough for now; but it's good to know
there are other options and examples to look at for the future.

That makes sense, but I'm thinking I'll go with the transparent .png.

This seems to be a copy of the greeter-gtkrc from the "ltsp" theme (with
one line of whitespace added). Having no "greeter-gtkrc" file should
produce the same result, FWIW.
