[sane-devel] I/O Errors with hp 7400c

Hello everybody,

my HP scanjet 7400c worked nicely over many years with ubuntu.
Now, for no reason I can see, it starts to throw I/O errors - the same
on the desktop with ubuntu 16.10 and the laptop 16.04. - I suspect, it
might be a hardware issue, but would be grateful for experts' hints
before I trash the device.

"scanimage -L" takes something like 20sec to provide a result, and
scanning by "scanimage >test.pwm" takes around a minute to create any
reaction, usually then it stops. All USB devices will be blocked then,
I only can reboot the machine.
On terminal, I can read "scanimage: sane_read: Error during device
I/O". In these cases, a 0byte file is written. This happens mostly, not
always, occasionally a successful scan happens.

This is what I can find in syslog:

Nov  2 19:12:18 Simux kernel: [   50.836033] usb 2-9: new full-speed
USB device number 5 using ohci-pci

IU'd be grateful if all this would speak to somebody who can geive me
some advice what to do.

Cheers,
Wolf
